*The South African Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPVIA) recently launched its PV GreenCard Programme, an industry led quality mechanism for solar PV installations.*
The PV GreenCard has been developed by SAPVIA in partnership with the German Solar Association and the German International Cooperation.
It will be a national, standardised hand-over or “as built” report for roof-top PV installations, aimed at improving the safety and quality of installations.
The programme was launched at the recent Electrical Safety Indaba Workshop, hosted by the Department of Labour (DoL), with the aim of providing stakeholders in the electrical industry with insights into safety and applicable compliance standards to be followed by industry players.
Key industry bodies such as South African National Accreditation System (SANAS), National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications, Association of Inspection Authorities (AIA) and Electrical Contractors Association of South Africa (ECASA) attended the event.
SAPVIA expressed its appreciation to be included and recognised as a key stakeholder to the DoL when it comes to solar PV installations. Read more: City of Cape Town to investigate affordable solar PV structures <www.esi-africa.com/city-of-cape-town-to-investigate-affordable-solar-pv-structures/>
The discussions focused on following key aspects such as;
1. Applicable and relevant accreditation standards 2. Developments in the electrical industry 3. Certification of electrical industry products by NCRS in as far as public health, safety and environmental protection is concerned. 4. The role of technologies such as SolarPV installations
In light of the recent IRP draft 2018, which had a balanced energy mix that provided specific recognition to renewable energy technologies such as solar PV, it therefore became necessary to put the spotlight on the solar PV industry’s role as far as skills development, compliance, safety and regulation goes. PV GreenCard Programme
SAPVIA made a presentation on behalf of the solar PV industry in which insights of the industry and solar PV as a technology were presented.
The presentation further focused on the highly acclaimed PV GreenCard Programme, built on skills development, standardised practices and detailed documentation of compliance.
The programme will provide comprehensive documentation of the PV system including information on used components and personal data of the owner, and will be a voluntary service from the installer which will serve as a guideline to both the installer and the customer on how to secure a high standard of PV system operation.
The aim is for the PV GreenCard to be issued with every small-scale Solar PV installation up to 100kWp by suitable qualified installers.
