Enabling small-scale embedded generation in SA

It is widely acknowledged that small-scale embedded generation, such as roof-top solar PV and other embedded generation technologies, can deliver several thousand MW of new generation capacity to the grid in one to two years, at no cost to Eskom or the fiscus.

However, policy, regulatory and planning uncertainty, and misguided efforts to protect the vested interests of the incumbents and the status quo, is delaying and frustrating the roll-out of small-scale embedded generation, to the detriment of electricity customers, job creation and the economy.

The seminar explores the role of small and medium-scale embedded generation and a ”smart grid" in meeting the electrical energy needs of the future – the necessary business case, policy, regulatory and financing environment for behind-the-meter solutions such as rooftop solar PV and other distributed generation.
