News & Events Who We Are What we do Contact
Dear Readers,

As of last month, the Beyond the Grid Fund for Zambia has provided 85,964 energy service subscriptions to Zambians in rural and peri-urban areas, delivering clean, affordable and reliable off-grid energy to more than 447,000 people in total. The stories of some of these customers can be found in a feature we published last week – find it here.

The ultimate goals of the programme? Firstly, to connect 1 million people to clean modern electricity by 2021. Secondly, and more importantly, to kick-start a sustainable market for off-grid clean energy services, provided by a number of competing, profitable companies and supported by an enabling policy environment and a wide range of investors.

We see progress on all counts: the Zambian Off-Grid Energy Task Force, launched in May 2018, has already seen the government and the private sector work together on clearer customs regulations for off-grid technology and a brand new mini-grid policy; and 12 new third-party financiers have invested a total of $24 million in the four companies working with BGFZ.

We are now ready to take the Beyond the Grid Fund approach much further, and we are in advanced talks with the BGFZ donor, the Swedish Government, to launch a Beyond the Grid Fund for Africa. Watch this space!

With best wishes,

Martin Hiller
