TIME: 12h00 to 14h30 SAST (GMT+2)
PLATFORM: Zoom Webinar
This was the 5th in a series of 5 webinars that explored the policies, business case, technologies and opportunities provided by green hydrogen and derivatives.
The webinar was opened Roberto Cecutti, Head of the Trade and Economic Section European Union Delegation to South Africa, who set the scene and then introduced Dr Riina Kionka, the European Union Ambassador to South Africa, who gave the opening keynote address.
Thereafter, expert presenters from CSIR, Boston Consulting Group, Plug Power and Royal HaskoningDHV each made 20-minute presentations, followed by a Q & A session.
The webinar launched a detailed CSIR study report commissioned by EU-SA Partners for Growth Programme on the near-term decarbonisation potential unlocked by the presence of large-scale hydrogen production and export from ports situated in the Western and Eastern Cape, namely the ports of Saldanha Bay and Nqura (Coega).
To achieve economies of scale, these plants, in addition to exporting hydrogen, can also supply hard-to-abate industries within a 150 km radius, providing fuel for rail, shipping (Gqeberha and Cape Town), buses, airports, refineries and steel plants.
This CSIR study seeks to demonstrate that South Africa’s green hydrogen potential is truly national by adding the impact in the Western and Eastern Cape provinces, and the webinar intended to contribute positively to unlocking the economic and human potential of South Africa.
