Symposium on a just coal transition for South Africa, 27th February 2019, Cape Town

UCT would like to invite you to another symposium that may be of interest. ERC, along with TIPS, IDDRI and Climate Strategies is pleased to invite you to a symposium on a just coal transition for South Africa, to be held in *Cape Town on 27th February 2019. *

The agenda is still being finalised but we will be hosting researchers, policy makers and government, union members, and industry from major coal countries— *China, India, South Africa, Indonesia, Germany, Poland, the United Kingdom, and Australia*—to share experiences of coal transitions globally. The agenda will cover the following themes:

· What can South Africa learn from historical and current coal transitions?
· How should the country position itself to optimize its existing assets while developing an economic trajectory that minimises poverty and inequality and protects livelihoods and coal communities?
· What lessons can be learned from global experiences with managing coal transitions? What policies can be used to promote a just transition through ensuring decent work and building inclusive and resilient economies? How have other coal regions implemented worker transition schemes and regional diversification strategies?

Please save the date, a fuller agenda and details of speakers will follow shortly. Please also circulate the invite amongst your networks.

Best wishes
