The Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection (MISTRA) invites you to the launch of MISTRA’s latest research publication entitled, A just transition to a low carbon future in South Africa. The research-based volume edited by Nqobile Xaba and Saliem Fakir aims to broaden the discourse on the low-carbon transition in South Africa, and explore the opportunities and impediments in making the transition fair, affordable and socioeconomically viable.

The questions posed relate to how South Africa can decarbonise while providing economic opportunities for the most vulnerable and alleviating inequality. The themes explored ensure a transdisciplinary integration of the issues presented by a low-carbon transition. These themes include a shift in economic paradigm, social factors of climate change, technologies as enablers for the transition. The proposed themes seek to address and engage with areas that are crucial in South Africa’s just transition to a low-carbon economy. The publication also aims to highlight the intricacies involved with a just transition in the South African context and to guide and influence policy reform.
