THE South African Local Government Association (Salga) has rejected claims that most metros and municipalities impose big markups on Eskom’s tariffs.
This comes amid accusations that municipal electricity tariffs have risen 400% and more, and as businesses claim price hikes are damaging growth and hiring prospects.
A general furore erupted following Eskom’s admission recently that BHP Billiton paid lower rates for electricity than domestic users because of a special deal.
Eskom has applied to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) for tariffs to increase 16% a year over the next five years.
