Engineering News 22 June 2010.
Private power aspirant CIC Energy confirmed on Tuesday that the Shanghai Electric Group had agreed to sustain the fixed price for the construction of the 1 320-MW Mmamabula power station, in Botswana, to allow for the remaining regulatory hurdles in South Africa, where the bulk of the power could be sold, to be cleared…
This is not good news!
Mmamabula is a planned, coal-powered power station in Botswana, from which Eskom is planning to buy power. Whether the coal is burnt in South Africa or Botswana, it still contributes to global warming and our carbon footprint. We should not be buying more high-carbon energy, we should rather encourage renewable energy investments in our neighbouring countries e.g. hydro from the DRC and Mozambique.

I think this is a great news for our country in terms of future power security and diversification of supply. Mmamabula has also allowed Black Economic Empowerement BEE access to up to 20% of the 2.6 Billion tons coal assets they control in Botswana which amount to up to 650 million tons to BEE. This is a big asset for our country. CIC is also going to use supercritical boilers that would help minimize their carbon footprint due to higher efficiency. There is no doubt that this would secure future supplies as Mmamabula is almost ready to go. Coal has been proven to be a very reliable source of energy over many centuries.

I agree with Cike. We need as much supply network as possible to ensure that the light keep turning on in the future. Mmamabula would surely provide the security. I like that they are bringing in BEE partners in Botswana. This is great for South Africa.
