At last, after planning since 2002, Eskom is to go ahead with its pilot concentrating solar power plant. However the reported price tag of R 6 billion for 100 MW (R 60 000/kW) is extremely high compared to the industry norms of around R32 000/kW (this is the DoE’s own figure from the IRP2 study done by the Electricity …Power Research Institute).
No doubt the reasons for the high costs will emerge when the tendering process starts.
