Medupi workers get ultimatum from firms

CONSTRUCTION companies at the Medupi power station, which has been closed for a month, have issued an ultimatum for workers to sign a peace agreement and return to work on Wednesday or face dismissal.

Construction on the 4,800MW coal-fired station in Limpopo came to a halt on January 16 as workers protested over partially paid year-end bonuses. Eskom has said the work suspension was putting pressure on the planned switch-on for the first generating unit by year-end.

“The workers were given until Wednesday by their employers, the construction companies, to sign the agreement to resume work,” Eskom finance director Paul O’Flaherty said on Monday. Eskom agreed to lock the site and suspend work on January 16 as a safety precaution…
