Can utilities adapt to emerging innovations that allow customers to “bypass” their services? Or, will power companies become the modern-day dinosaur?
(Editor’s comment: Although RMI is US-based and reports mainly on US matters, this article is relevant to South African electricity suppliers. This is the issue of how Eskom and municipalities manage the problem of their customers installing rooftop solar PV and thereby eating into the electricity revenue (which is used by municipalities to cross-subsidise other essential services they offer.)
The trend is toward more independent customers who are able to generate their own electricity — all spearheaded by advancing technologies that are becoming cheaper and more effective. But just how all it all “ends” cannot yet be forecast.
