INVESTMENT decisions about the building of new base-load energy capacity — in particular nuclear power plants — look likely to be pushed further into the future when the Department of Energy’s new draft of the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) is discussed among stakeholders in the next few weeks.
The department will release its much-awaited plan at road shows around South Africa from September 25.
The updated plan, which will contain new assumptions about electricity demand and the costs of various energy sources, is critical to the debate over whether South Africa requires nuclear energy plants or not. Its assumptions will be fiercely debated by the National Planning Commission, which in April attempted to pre-empt it by producing its modelling of demand and costs. Read on BDLive >
